Act Math Practice
Internet Providers

Elementary Algebra Answer 3:

3. An internet provider sells internet packages based on low monthly rates. The price for the internet service depends on the speed of the internet connection. The chart below indicates the prices of the various internet packages:

Price in dollars (P) 10 20 30 40
Gigabyte speed (S) 2 4 6 8

Which equation represents the prices of these internet packages?

A. P = (S - 5) ´ 5

B. P = (S + 5) ´ 5

C. P = 5 ÷ S

D. P = S ´ 5

E. P = S ÷ 5

The correct answer is D.

The price of the internet connection is always 5 times more than the speed.

10 ÷ 2 = 5
20 ÷ 4 = 5
30 ÷ 6 = 5
40 ÷ 8 = 5

So the price of the internet connection (representented by variable P) equals the speed (represented by variable S) times 5:

P = S ´ 5
